LOUISVILLE, Ky.–When you think of the hottest new appliance technologies, you don’t always think of your grandma. But GE Appliances is challenging America to think again. On a hunt to hire the Great American Grandma, GE Appliances received more than 680 video applications from some of the nation’s coolest and tech-savviest grannies, all vying for a job as a brand ambassador for the company’s leading appliances, including its new Kitchen Hub, launching in May.
Today, those #GreatAmericanGrandma candidates have been narrowed to just 10 finalists from across the United States. Representing all the reasons grandmothers are the heart of their families, the top candidates stood out with their energy, creativity, camera presences, storytelling ability, spunk and intangible ‘je ne sais quoi’. They include:
- Ally Phillips, Murrells Inlet, South Carolina
- Andrea Florentine, Gibsonia, Pennsylvania
- Angelita Martinez, Kuna, Idaho
- Darla Card, Harlingen, Texas
- Jill Ridge, Indianapolis, Indiana
- Joyce Sutera, Lake Arrowhead, California
- Lindita Torres-Winters, Aurora, Colorado
- Mamie (Gran Gran) Dupree-Hegwood, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
- Sheila Chandler, Umatilla, Florida
- Tonya Godsey-Lowe, Louisville, Kentucky
“We have some amazing applicants who are redefining what it means to be called Grandma. They use the kitchen as a place to gather, create and nurture their families,” said Wendy Treinen, director of grandma relations for GE Appliances. “All 10 of our finalists had that certain ‘IT’ factor that caught our attention, and they all represent the vital role of grandmothers everywhere. There can be only one Great American Grandma, and we look forward to seeing how she will use new kitchen technology to extend her family traditions, recipes, and cooking talent to our fans.”
GE Appliances posted its unconventional help-wanted ad in January, seeking a professional grandma. But not just any grandma. The company was searching for a big-hearted, age-defying, lives-life-to-the-fullest and brings-out-the-best-in-everyone kind of grandma. The company will hire the Great American Grandma part-time for the coming year. And the lucky appointee will earn a $50,000 salary and five top-of-the-line GE Appliances kitchen products. She will serve as an ambassador and spokes-grandma for the company, sharing the secrets of great recipes and of food, fun and family.
GE Appliances will reveal the grandma candidate who’s been selected for the job on April 2.
